Volunteer Calendar
Each day at the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee, you will walk into the offices and are met by a smiling face at the reception desk. The face changes each day because it belongs to one of a dozen people that make up the volunteers of the Presbytery of Middle Tennessee. These dedicated volunteers answer the telephones, help with mailings, and work in the resource center shelving books and assisting in locating resources. The volunteers have also helped with Presbytery wide surveys such as identifying Christian educators, learning about upcoming mission trips, and updating the Presbytery directory. They also take reservations for the meeting rooms at the Presbytery and for the use of the audio/visual equipment.
The volunteers come from diverse backgrounds and give their time to help minister to the members of the Presbytery. Some volunteers enjoy working on the computer; others like helping with the mailings; all are responsible for greeting visitors to the offices and answering the telephone. Everyone brings a different set of skills to help with the work of the Presbytery.
Many times a volunteer will learn about an upcoming event at the Presbytery and take this information back to his or her own church. This has been another big plus of the volunteer program. For example, a volunteer asked about posters on the wall from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance. She wanted to get copies of these and place them on the walls at her church during their upcoming Vacation Bible School. With the help of the staff, she was able to order them through the PCUSA website.
Ed Snyder from First Presbyterian Church of Franklin, who has been with the volunteer program since its inception over three years ago, says, “The volunteer program has given me a chance to learn some new things which I always enjoy. It’s fun to mix and meet with other people that have the same kind of interests.”
Typically, volunteers come in 2 days a month from 9-1. They also attend a monthly planning meeting where they receive a schedule for work dates. Carie Turner is the coordinator for the volunteer program and is responsible for training and scheduling.
