Resolution - 01/03/06 2005 Archive - 2006 Archive

It seems strange to me that we use the word “resolution” to describe our best intentions for a new year. The word has several meanings, none of which seem to speak directly to the leaf-turning, new-year promises we make to ourselves. What is a new year’s resolution?

It can mean, “a resolving or being resolved” like the solving of a problem, crisis, or conundrum. Seldom do I remember a new year’s resolution fitting this description; though I suspect that there are many of us who would like to have such solutions to begin the new year. What difficulties in your life would you most like to resolve this year?

Another meaning is, “the quality of not allowing difficulties or opposition to affect one’s purpose.” While an extreme dose of this trait can be dangerous bull-headedness that runs roughshod over others and their feelings, an even-tempered dose of this kind of resolution is essential to strong character. Who among us would not like to have a little more of this to carry us through the next year?

Resolution can mean, “a formal statement of opinion or decision, agreed to after the consideration of a motion.” These are the kinds of documents that are inserted into Session or governmental council minutes, often giving thanks for the dedication of a person or group of hard-working individuals, peppered with a collection of “whereases”, and punctuated with a powerful “therefore.” As we make our way through another year, wouldn’t you like to be a willing participant in at least one such faithfully significant resolution?

As our church begins a new year, guided by the Holy Spirit, led by its thirteen member Session, and supported by the prayers and work of its membership, let us seek to be a part of all three of these significant meaning of “resolution.” Let us resolve to offer our prayers and lives to God’s work of solving the problems around us. Let us stand firm in our God-guided purposes, in spite of opposition and difficulty. Let us dare to speak God’s truth, after prayerful and careful consideration. Let us live with resolution!
